About New Thought

Our movement in North America began in the early 19th century, lead by Phineas Quimby and Franz Mesmer.  It was preceded by “ancient thought,” accumulated wisdom and philosophy from a variety of origins, including Taoist, Vedic, Muslim, Hindu and Buddhist cultures and their related belief systems, primarily regarding the interaction between thought, belief, consciousness in the human mind, and the effects of these within and beyond the human mind.

New Thought holds that God (Spirit, the Infinite, the Divine, our Higher Power) is everywhere; true human self-hood is divine; divine thought is a force for good; sickness, lack and struggle originate in the mind, and “right thinking” has a healing effect.  In other words, “change your thinking, change your life.”

New Thought teachings are also founded on the teachings of Jesus from the New Testament:

“…let it be done to you according to your belief.”  (Matthew 8:13)

“Arise, go; your faith has healed you.”  (Luke 17:19)

“…even greater than these things he shall do.”  (John 14:12)

Contemporary New Thought leaders and authors include Richard Rohr, Eckhart Tolle, Marianne Williamson and Wayne Dyer, as well as Religious Science founder Ernest Holmes and Unity founders Charles and Myrtle Fillmore.

You are invited to consult our Member Directory to find a congregation or practitioner near you.

Other New Thought Organizations

ANTN is one of many New Thought organizations around the country. Below are some of those organizations.

The Association for Global New Thought was co-founded in 1996 to represent the leading edge of the New Thought lineage. Its constituent member churches and centers (700-800 in network) among Unity, Religious Science, and nondenominational New Thought spiritual communities are called forth by a deep commitment to bring the principles and practices of co-creation to a sacred and troubled world.

Centers for Spiritual Living is an organization of nearly 400 spiritual communities around the globe that provide spiritual tools to transform personal lives and help make the world a better place. At Centers for Spiritual Living, our spiritual communities teach powerful principles for personal growth and global transformation, honoring all paths to God.

Divine Science was first taught in 1888 by Malinda E. Cramer. It is a spiritual faith as well as a practical Science that teaches we are all sacred beings, made in the "image and likeness" of our Creator, who is continually present everywhere, including within us. It is all Good and only Good. As children of this One Divine Creator, we are all connected to it - and to each other. By living our lives in accordance with this Truth, and all that expresses from it, we are sure to lead more happy and fulfilled lives.

The Agape International Spiritual Center is a global community dedicated to recognizing, honoring and nurturing the dignity and uniqueness of all peoples. Through devoted practice of universal spiritual principles embodied in the New Thought-Ancient Wisdom teachings, Agape is an agent of transformation. As a transdenominational community, Agape serves within all levels of society to reveal the underlying perfection and harmony of the Universe.

The International New Thought Alliance is a global organization dedicated to the spiritual enlightenment and transformation of the individual and the world since 1914. Its purpose is to promote cooperation, provide a basis for common effort of the various units of the New Thought world, promote those activities that cannot of their very nature be accomplished by each group or individual alone, disseminate and publish the good news of New Thought, and build a spiritual fellowship that will secure the respect of all human beings.

Unity’s vision is advancing the global movement of spiritual awakening and transformation through Unity. Their missions is to help and serve through prayer, publishing, and community.

The Universal Foundation for Better Living (UFBL), founded by the Rev. Dr. Johnnie Coleman in 1974, is an international association of Bible-based New Thought Christian churches, centers, and study groups dedicated to spreading the abundant life teachings of Jesus the Christ. The New Thought teachings of the UFBL offer Truth students tools to study and interpret the Bible allegorically, apply its ancient wisdom to everyday life, and reconnect with the indwelling presence and power of God.
